MWUN Slams 2 Years Suspension On Unit Chairman

The Delta District of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) yesterday said it had suspended its Unit Chairman at Escravos; Mr Tunokan Ebami, over anti-union activities.

The District Chairman and Secretary, Mr Boro Ekotoro and Olowojaiye Sunday, disclosed this to newsmen in Warri, Delta state.

Ebami, the embattled Chairman of Escravos Seafarer Unit, was alleged to have invaded the district secretariat in Warri with armed mobile policemen on July 9.

They also alleged that Ebami was involved in fraudulent activities which included non-remittance of union dues and subscriptions by sea fearers in the Escravos unit and refusal to hand over properties in his possession.

The statement said that: “ Ebami has been suspended for two years from the MWUN, Seamen, NIWA and Water Transport Branch, Delta District.

“This suspension is as a result of his continuous act of insubordination, gross misconduct, willful disobedience and breach of the union’s constitution.

“It shall take effect from Aug. 6 to Aug. 5, 2020. This action is in accordance with Rule 12, Paragraph IV (e) of the Union’s Constitution.

“During the period of suspension, Ebami is barred from contesting the forthcoming Escravos Seafarers Unit election. He is also barred from representing the union in any capacity.

“Any misconduct by the embattled chairman will be viewed as unwillingness to comply with the provisions of the Union’s Constitution and will result to outright expulsion”.

Responding, Ebami said that he would institute a legal action against the district, adding that he had not received any suspension letter to that effect.

He said: “I have not got that information yet. I have not received any letter for my suspension. They don’t have the right to suspend me.

“There is an issue and I told them that they are bias and corrupt. If there is an issue like that, I will sue them to court. They don’t even have that right to suspend me,” he said.
