The President of Guild Marine Surveyors in Nigeria (GMSN) , Mr Monday Ogadina, on Thursday advised Insurers not to engage unqualified surveyors so as to minimise losses.
Ogadina said this at a press briefing organised to draw the attention of underwriters and government to the prominent role the guild could play in mitigating losses in the country.
He said, the nation might be loosing up two million dollars monthly as the result of the non engagement of qualified marine surveyor's report to confirm marine damages and whom to pay the damages to.

He said, the nation might be loosing up two million dollars monthly as the result of the non engagement of qualified marine surveyor's report to confirm marine damages and whom to pay the damages to.
He said the task of qualified Marine Surveyors insurers was to ascertain who was actually responsible for risked incurred and losses.
" Not all marine risks should be directed to insurers, sometimes shipowners may be responsible for risks involved,
"It is only marine surveyors' report that could help find the cause, " he said.
He said the formation GMSN , apart from the above objectives, was to fill in the gap as it was the case in other parts of the world.
"Local marine Surveyors professional association exists in UK, USA and our close neighbour Ghana.
"We are the only independent organisation charged with issuing independent technical report in case of dispute resolutions, facts verification and management of marine claims for both cargo , haul and machinery events.
Ogadina said the guild, in order to stabilise its synergy with insurers, participated in the educational tour organised by Marine offices committee of Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) in 2014.
Also a certification workshop was recently held by the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) and the Guild to strength the synergy.
He called on all surveyors to register with GMSN and the insurance companies they work for.
GHe also urged the Federal government to give priority to actualization of Nigerian Local Content Marine Surveyors sector.

" Foreign operators come in freely to snatch our businesses. So we want government's support and full recognition of local surveyors.''
GMSN is the umbrella body for registered Marine Surveyors , Cargo Superintendents and Maritime Consultants/ experts in Nigeria,
The body was established on Nov. 25, 2004 and registered with Corporate Affairs Commission on March 21, 2006
