Maritime Union Leader Seeks Collaboration with NIMASA, NPA on Effective Policing

Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), has pledged to take the issue of effective policing to the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr Abubakar Dantsoho.

Adeyanju made this commitment during a recent visit by the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Port Police Command, Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, to the MWUN secretariat. During the visit, the Union leader emphasized the need for proper equipment for the Police to prevent crime and protect property, and sought the support of NIMASA and NPA in achieving this goal.

CP Maikaba, visited the MWUN secretariat to fraternize and familiarize his command with one of the foremost maritime unions in the country.

The Port Police Chief expressed his admiration for the warm reception and described the Union’s secretariat as “monumental and unprecedented.” He noted that the visit aimed to form a community synergy with the Union, acknowledging that the Police cannot work in isolation without the Union, a major stakeholder in the maritime industry.

Maikaba praised MWUN’s leadership under Comrade Adeyanju, describing him as a “brother” and emphasizing that his office is always open to the Union. He commended the Union’s executives, stating that he is impressed by their caliber.

Comrade Adeyanju equally hailed CP Maikaba as a “crack and versatile Police officer” with an impressive profile. He highlighted the CP’s achievements, including his graduation from the Nigeria Police Academy in 1994 and his service in various capacities, including peacekeeping missions to Sudan and Kosovo, where he received the United Nations commendation award.

During the occasion, Adeyanju posed a rhetorical question, “What is Police?” and answered, “Police is all about policing,” emphasizing CP Maikaba’s embodiment of this principle. He assured the CP that the era of thuggery and hooliganism has ended, and the Union has been digitalized with well-trained workers.

The MWUN leader noted that the Union may issue threats of strikes when necessary but always exhausts all avenues and considers the economic implications of shutting down the nation’s gateway. He promised to work with the Command and assured that the port environment will be conducive for operations.
