The Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association has appointed Emmanuel Yakubu as the new training commander to pilot the affairs of the forthcoming orientation programme for Nigerian seafarers.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos yesterday, President of the association, Engineer Mathew Alalade said the appointment of the retired Navy officer was in line with comprehensive and standard training for cadets and mid-shipmen who are Nigerian seafarers.
The Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association has appointed Emmanuel Yakubu as the new training commander to pilot the affairs of the forthcoming orientation programme for Nigerian seafarers.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos yesterday, President of the association, Engineer Mathew Alalade said the appointment of the retired Navy officer was in line with comprehensive and standard training for cadets and mid-shipmen who are Nigerian seafarers.
Alalade said that the association wanted a more formidable and enhanced programme that cadets can be proud of.
He declared that the orientation is needed to boost the image of the association, adding that there is the need for members to be more disciplined in their endeavours.
The merchant Navy boss reiterated that the new training commander has what it takes to impact on cadets following his wealth of experience as a retired naval personnel, who, according to him, is discipline and dedicated.
He added that most of orientation programmes will center round discipline for the Nigerian seafarers.
"The orientation exercise being organized by the association has come a long way .The association is more interested in the mode and manner by which the cadets and midshipmen in our affiliated academies are trained", he explained.
"It is the aspiration of the association to give befitting orientation training to our cadets and midshipmen who are Nigerian seafarers’ ambassador within and outside the country so as to keep the Nigeria Merchant Navy flag flying” he stressed.
Shipping Position Daily was told that, Yakubu Emmanuel will be assisted by Engineer Ajao Lateef Sani who is also a member of the association.
In his response,the newly-appointed commandant, Yakubu Emmanuel promised that there will be new innovation for cadets.
He said that there will be new approaches to training and that heads of institutions will appreciate the need for the orientation programmes to be organised by the association.
According to him, the association will continue to improve on the training of cadets.
The retired Petty officer also urged cadets to brace up, describing the profession as highly which needs more patience.
He also called on cadets to read and carry out research work for self development.
