A Save-our-Soul (SOS) message has gone out to the Federal Government to come to the aid of private maritime institutions through the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in order to enable them to develop better.
The President of the Nigerian Merchant Navy Senior Officers and Water Transport Association, Engineer Matthew Alalade made this call last week in Lagos, even as he implored the Federal Government to assist maritime institutions for further growth and development.

The President of the Nigerian Merchant Navy Senior Officers and Water Transport Association, Engineer Matthew Alalade made this call last week in Lagos, even as he implored the Federal Government to assist maritime institutions for further growth and development.
In a chat with Shipping Position Daily, Alalade gave a score card of the private training institutions in Nigeria and said that they have performed up to 70 per cent in the year under review.
According to him, “ maritime institutions, the private ones are making strides in the industry in the sense that most of their cadets have a joint agreement with some of our unions and the shipping companies, so they send their cadets on board for sea time, this are part of the great strides we are making”.
He called on the Federal Government to encourage these institutions and assist them in order to make them develop because according to him, the number of training institutions in the country presently is not adequate, compared to the population of the country.
“The government should assist them and go to all of them, although not all of them but those that have been approved by the technical board and the maritime technical board which I won’t name, because most of them do come to merchant navy, and most of them have been approved by the National Board for Technical Education, (NBTE) and Ministry of Education”
He however urged NIMASA to also have the list of the schools that have been approved by the board so as to support these private institutions to develop and grow beyond the level that they are at the moment.
