MWUN: Major Contender Steps Down From Today’s Dockworkers Election  

Even as the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) sets to hold elections into its dockworkers branch today, a major contender in the election; Comrade Johnbull Ikharia has stepped down for his opponent, Comrade Umar Ohize.
Johnbull had served for eight years as Vice President under Comrade Adewale Adeyanju who is now the President General of the union confirmed his action to one of our correspondents yesterday.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily via telephone yesterday, Comrade Johnbull confirmed that he was no longer interested in the race to become President of the dockworkers branch of the union.
Comrade Johnbull’s action automatically leaves Comrade Ohize to run unopposed. Comrade Ohize had hitherto worked at the ENL terminal as a principal officer of the union.
Confirming his withdrawal from the race, Comrade Johnbull said, "I am not preparing for the election, I am not interested anymore"
Also confirming that the long-awaited branch election will hold today( Friday), President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju told our correspondent that all is set for the election.
He also confirmed that Comrade Johnbull had stepped down, an indication that there will be only one candidate for the highly-referred post of President of Dockworkers branch of the MWUN.
Shipping Position Daily recalls that, in a recent chat with our correspondent, the PG of MWUN; Comrade Adeyanju had raised an alarm that 13 candidate were contending to become President of the dockworkers branch.
He however confirmed that by last week the number has reduced to two candidates.
Comrade Adeyanju also dispelled rumours of possible crisis brewing within the union leadership on account of the dockworkers branch elections.
Comrade Adeyanju told our correspondent that he had to consult widely on the dockworkers election unlike the ones held into its NPA branch, Shipping Branch and Seaman and NIWA branch.
