The National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) has exited from the Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations (COMTUA) with immediate effect, staring that the association can no longer associate with a group of people that constantly engage in extortion and all kinds of illegality at the Nigerian port.

ALOGA-OGBOGO

In a letter signed by the Executive Secretary of NARTO, Mr Aloga Ogbogo, dated 16th November 2021, a copy of which was received by our correspondent, NARTO stated that COMTUA has deviated from the original plan for which it was formed.

NARTO informed that going forward, the association would no longer participate in the affairs of COMTUA or be held responsible in any of its actions.

Ogbogo among other crimes, alleged that members of the COMTUA often spearhead attacks which often result in injuries and deaths of some of its co-collaborators.

He also noted that rather than COMTUA focusing on the best way to achieve the noble objectives for which the union was set up, some members of the council resorted to internal and external petitions with the letterhead of the council without due consultation with the leadership, coupled with attacks upon attacks on co-collaborators that has sometimes resulted to serious injuries and death which does not give COMTUA a good image before the public.

He said “We write to notify you of the withdrawal of Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) from Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations (COMTUA) with effect from the date of this letter.

“The Association have seen that the running of COMTUA activities id in variance with the objectives for which it was formed and therefore has come to an inevitable conclusion not to be part of the collaboration any longer.

“NARTO is a body, whose membership cuts across the country and West Africa Sub-region, engaged in haulage of petroleum products, general cargoes and movement of passengers. As the mouthpiece of all Road Transport Haulage, representing in some Government Agencies and Parastatals cannot afford to go into any form of collaboration with any organization that has conflicting objectives with its parent body.

“Instead of COMTUA focusing on the best way to achieving these noble objectives, some members of the council resorted to internal and external petitions with the letterhead of the council without due consultation with the leadership, coupled with attacks upon attacks on co-collaborators that has sometimes resulted to serious injuries and death which does not give COMTUA a good image before the public.

“There are also reported cases of all kinds of illegality and extortion of money from co-members which contravenes the objectives for which COMTUA was formed

“Consequent upon the aforementioned, NARTO cannot continue to collaborate in this regard and therefore, tender its withdrawal letter, which is an indication that we would no longer participate in the affairs of COMTUA nor be held responsible and accountable for any cause occasioned by the council.

“However, as one of the major Associations that paid all the loading fees to the account of COMTUA, we hereby call on the leadership to account for the total sum of money in the council account, after which same is distributed to the collaborating unions and associations” it reads.
