As part of measures to enlighten, sensitize and educate the Nigerian dockworkers on the best mode of operations in Nigerian ports, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has developed an intensive human capacity programme to equip the labour workers of the maritime sector.
The programme tagged: "Dock Labour Decent Work Agenda" is designed for dockworker, stevedoring companies, terminal operators and other stakeholders in the Nigerian maritime industry.

The programme tagged: "Dock Labour Decent Work Agenda" is designed for dockworker, stevedoring companies, terminal operators and other stakeholders in the Nigerian maritime industry.
In his paper presentation, Chairman Port Consultative Council, Otunba Kunle Folarin told the participants that the focus of the seminar is to provide strategic guidelines in the provision of decent work environment and safe regime in work procedures and processes.
Folarin in his paper "Decent Work – Safe Work, Strategic Issues", said the programme strikes a strategic alliance between all business and social partners who engage in issues of work and welfare for all categories of dock labour.
He noted that for more than four decades, the International Labour Organisation (ILO)has worked with major social partners including Ship Owners, Terminal Operators, Maritime Workers Unions and Government to achieve a comprehensive reform of working environment in other to provide a platform that will create decent and safe environment in labour operation.
He noted that the fundamental issues centered around acquisition of appropriate skills, kitting occupational safety and health, legal regimes, employee compensation and other matters relating to the conventions and recommendations on decent and safe working environment.
The PCC boss said in other to achieve the objectives of the convention, an active collaboration and implementation structure will be establish between NIMASA, the dock labour employers and the union.
According to him, the inspection unit of the Maritime Labour Services department must implement and monitor compliance of all the articles of the conventions.
He noted that employers of dockworkers in particular should be made to comply with the provision of Operational Safety and Health (OSH).
Speaking further the PCC boss added that training and welfare issues of dockworkers should be given priorities and measured to ensure relevance in modern techniques and technologies applications.
Folarin stressed that a monitoring committee of stakeholders should be established to discuss issues arising from the implementation and to resolve disputes and grey area.
