Capt. Peter Pade, a marine expert, on Monday urged the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to review upwards the salary of its workers.
Pade told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the need for an upwards review of NIMASA workers salary was because they earned the least among their contemporaries in the maritime industry.
He said that the demand for their pay increase and for “a living wage’’ followed increasing demand of the job and operational risks.

“I have not been enjoying my family, because I spend most time working on the sea and less time at home.
“I have nothing tangible to take home at the end of the month as salary because the salary is very poor,’’ Pade said.
Mr Erinfolami Kola, a marine engineer said that NIMASA current salary scale fell short of the industry wage structure approved by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for maritime workers.
“Here in Nigeria we only work tirelessly without justifiable wages at the end of the month.
“I have been in service for 20 years, my salary is about N60, 000. It is not encouraging,
“We passed through the same training as our foreign counterparts in the industry but our pay cannot be compared with what they earn,’’ he said.
Capt. Bola Suaibu, a sailor, said that the Federal Government had not done enough for the maritime industry in spite the sector’s contributions to the economy.
He said that NIMASA as an agency of government should be proactive and address workers wages and general welfare.
