The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Thursday expressed its commitment to greater domestic utilisation of gas to rapidly drive national economic growth.
This is contained in a statement signed by Fidel Pepple, on behalf of the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC in Abuja.
According to the statement, the commitment is sequel to the Federal Government's transformation agenda and the recent Performance Contract signed by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, with Mr President.
It said the NNPC Group Managing Director (GMD), Mr Andrew Yakubu, made this known at a dinner in his honour and the Group Executive Director, Corporate Services of the corporation, Dr Peter Nmadu.
It stated that Yakubu said the NNPC was committed to increasing gas utilisation to stimulate industrialisation in the country.
“The NNPC is already pursuing greater domestic gas utilisation to support the Federal Government’s drive for stable and sustainable power supply and national economic growth,” Yakubu said.
According to him, Nigeria’s abundant gas resources can sustain the nation’s dream of stable national power supply while gas supply to light industries will increase gas utilisation and support economic growth.
The GMD said the NNPC was committed to the core values of transparency and accountability at all levels noting that the corporation was pursuing a new agenda to reposition the company for more efficient performance.
“NNPC must be commercially-focused and aligned with the Nigerian economic growth aspirations.
“We must therefore, raise our operational and financial standards to enable us operate competitively in the entire oil and gas value chain within and outside Nigeria.’’
The statement said Vice President Namadi Sambo, who was represented by Malam Aminu Dabo, implored the management to run NNPC transparently.
Sambo said the corporation was the most strategic agency of the Federal Government.
Also, Gov. Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta assured the management of the support of the Nigeria Governors Forum in repositioning the oil industry as the backbone of the economy.
The Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, applauded President Goodluck Jonathan for the appointment of Yakubu and his team.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Tony Anenih, congratulated the management.
Also, one of the organisers of the event, Prof. Jerry Gana, said the occasion was informed by the need to impress on the management team that it could not afford to fail Nigerians.
The occasion was attended by governors of Kaduna, Benue, Plateau, Gombe and former Ministers of Defence and FCT,, Lt.-Gen. T.Y Danjuma, Lt.-Gen. J.T. Useni, among others
