NPA Removes 100 Wrecks From Lagos Waters

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Ms Hadiza Bala Usman has said that the authority in partnership with its joint venture company; Lagos Channel Management (LCM) has removed 100 wrecks from Lagos waters.
Hadiza stated this while speaking at the commissioning of four tug boats that were newly acquired by the authority in Lagos on Wednesday.
According to her, one of the duties of the NPA is to ensure safety of navigation and management of the channels. 
She said the authority is fulfilling this obligation through a joint venture management company that carries out capital and maintenance dredging of the channels. She noted that the partnership has significantly improved and deepened the channels.
According to her "the Lagos channel is 13.513.5meters deep and more than 100 wrecks has been removed  through this joint partnership" 
"We have started receiving larger vessels of 232.3meters that carry 3,500TEU, the a vessels require 11.5meters depth.  In addition, WAFMAX 250 meter long vessel requiring 13.5meters draft belonging to Maersk shipping has begun a call on Lagos ports"
"It is important to note that improvement of the channel alone does not ensure safety of navigation, the deployment of marine crafts like thug boats and pilot quarters also play important roles"
"The tug boats are needed to assist the vessel through the channels to berth while the pilot quarters convey the pilots to where they would take over piloting of vessels into the channels"
The NPA boss stated that the acquisition of the four tub boats is solution to the authority's incessant challenge of inadequate thug boats especially in the Lagos area.
Giving the features of the tug boats named MT DAURA Lagos , MT UBIMA, MT UROMI and MT MAJIYA,  she said each of the vessels has 60tonnes pull capacity and can handle vessels capacity of 200 meter and above.
