Even as the Feral Government is said to be toying with the idea of expunging the name of Cross Rivers State fro the list of oil producing states in Nigeria, the Cross River State House of Assembly has called on the Federal Government to compensate the state for its loss of the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon, and 67 oil wells to neighbouring Akwa Ibom State.
Taking the stand last week, the states law makers passed a six point resolution in which they requested that the Federal Government should appropriately compensate Cross River State and its people in perpetuity, for the ceding of the oil rich Bakassi Peninsula and the displacement of its population, which was done in the corporate interest of the nation."
The lawmakers also pleaded for a revisit of the decision of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to cut the states allocation and rights as an oil producing state. It pleaded that the commission “should review and reverse its decision to exclude Cross River State from receiving its due entitlement as an oil producing state."
In the resolution which was read by the Assembly’s speaker Mr Francis Adah, they called for the intervention of President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua in the matter, “with a view to redressing the injustice being meted out to Cross River State and its people."
It also pleaded that “the National Boundary Commission should revisit as a matter of urgency, the purported boundary adjustment between Cross River State and its sister state, Akwa Ibom, leading to the loss of our membership of the league of oil producing states in Nigeria”.
