Police, NPA Strategise On Port Security

The Executive Director, Marine and Operations, Nigerian Ports Authority, Engineer David Omonibeke has said that NPA  appreciates the crucial roles of the Ports Authority Police Command[PAPC], and will continue to cultivate, maintain and sustain a mutual working relationship with the command.

Engineer Omonibeke spoke in his capacity as the chairman of a meeting between the NPA’s security department and the Ports Authority Police Command held in Lagos last week, also noted that without adequate security, life and property are at great risk
He consequently assured the port police that NPA will continue to support the command by providing necessary logistics that will enhance their performance.
The Executive Director commended the new Commissioner of Police, Mrs Sherifat Olakoju for swinging into action since her resumption, adding that a remarkable change has been noticed since she assumed duty.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the General Manager Security of the Authority, Col. Jamil Tahir [rtd], disclosed that management of NPA finds it expedient to convey the meeting in order to map out strategies to confront the present security challenges facing the country.
Col. Tahir asserted that although there had not been cases of terrorist attack at the nation’s seaports due to vigilance of security agencies, there is need for synergy among government agencies in order to prevent any security breach.
Also speaking, the Ports Police Commissioner, Mrs Olakoju told the gathering that she had toured the ports in Lagos shortly after her assumption of duty and discovered that a lot more needs to be done to improve  Ports Security. She solicited additional support of the Authority in the areas of marine training, provision of patrol vehicles, accommodation, communication gadgets, sniffer dogs, among other.
The meeting was attended by the General Manager, Western Ports, Ms Adenike Shonaike, General Manager, Eastern Ports, Engr. Sunny Nwobi, Assistant General Manager, Security, Western Port, Mr. Sam Asamage and heads of security from the ports.
The Police team comprised the Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, two Assistant Commissioners of Police and all the Divisional Police officers from the Ports.
