The seaport terminal operation arm of the Sifax Group is marching on in its resolve to make the terminal a model one that can hold its own in the comity of seaport terminal operators worldwide by recently embarking on some massive capital projects aimed at making doing business at the terminal a seamless operation and in very conducive environment
To demonstrate this, the company, late last year placed orders for 10 Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) from a Finnish company (Konecrane,) worth billions of Naira. This equipment will ensure minimal human interference in container handling in the port and also ensure prompt effectiveness and efficiency of container operation and delivery in the terminal.
Also, the perimeter fencing that meets international standard and even surpasses the requirements of the Presidential Implementation Committee on Maritime Safety and Security PICOMSS has been completed at a huge sum of N165million. This project provides a complete see- through round the large expanse of the whole terminal and at the same time preventing access to unauthorized persons, thereby bringing criminal activities to the barest minimum.
The yard capacity has also been increased from 9, 500 teus to 14, 000 teus after the successful demolition of warehouse “B” as contained in the Concession Agreement; this will increase the holding capacity of the yard, thereby reducing the chances of congestion in the terminal.
With the recent acquisition of five new Reach Stackers and the anticipated delivery of additional two unit of mobile cranes to complement the four that are already in use since 2007; expected in the next two months and the 10 RTGs expected before the end of this year, a massive re-surfacing of the terminal has commenced with about N2.5billion already expended on this project in the last six months of the start of the job and work is still on-going.
The company has also signed an MoU with SDMO to provide two units of  1,250 KVA generating sets with automatic control panel to boost the existing power generation at a whopping cost of almost 800,000EUROS; these generating sets are expected to be delivered on the 23rd of June, 2012.
To ease the location of consignment in the terminal, a huge revenue has also be invested in the OSCAR terminal tracking system, this project is on-going and will be completed soon.
Also, about one week ago, two MAXIMAL FD30T 3 tons Forklifts which cost about N9million were delivered to the terminal to improve operations within the terminal; these equipment have been deployed into operations accordingly.
It is important to note that tens of millions of naira are being expended on degreasing of the terminal floor to ensure cleanliness from oil leakages and deposits from trucks coming into the terminal to load consignments out.
Recently, a new member of Sifax Group was ‘born’; this is Sifax Bonded Terminal and Warehouse, Okota. Lagos. This bonded terminal just got licensed and it is set to commence operations in the next one month as all the necessary things are being put in place; this terminal will be under Tin-Can Island port command of the Nigeria Customs Service with capacity for about 1, 800teus; this will further remove the burden of port congestion from Tin Can Island port, thereby ensuring that we are tending towards international best practices.
