The Chairman of Rivers State Chapter of Fisheries Society of Nigeria (RIVFISON), Pastor D. I. George has reiterated the group’s commitment to economic growth even as he expressed optimism that the society is on steady growth and development in its membership drive.
George stated this while speaking during the inaugural public lecture titled: “Untapped Opportunities of Nigeria Fisheries and Aquaculture for Growth, Food Security and Job Creation” at the ministry of Justice auditorium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, recently.

George stated this while speaking during the inaugural public lecture titled: “Untapped Opportunities of Nigeria Fisheries and Aquaculture for Growth, Food Security and Job Creation” at the ministry of Justice auditorium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, recently.
The RIVFISON chairman noted that over 300 persons are registered members of the society, adding that more individuals are keenly interested to be part of the society.
He said the interest of the society is on fisheries and aquaculture, pointing out that development of fisheries policy in the country will contribute to creation of employment opportunities, which he said will boost the nation’s economy.
Dr. George also assured that RIVFISON will continue to collaborate with other related bodies in order to help members to boost capacity.
Delivering a lecture, Prof A Akonye, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt said that investing on fish farming will to a large extent help to boost employment and the economy.
“Buguma Fish farm, Ubima fish farm and others” are today contrsibuting a lot to enhance development and create Jobs”, Prof. Akonye stated.
Also speaking Director Centre for Marine Pollution and Monitoring of Seafood Safety of the same university, Prof. Francis D Sikoki, , spoke on “Untapped Investment Opportunities in the Fisheries/ Aquaculture Sub Sector in Nigeria”. He urged Nigeria to key into the potentials inherent in export, so as not to lose over N.I.6 trillion lost in fish – related import to Nigeria.
On her part Mrs. Pakama Horsfall, Head Aquaculture and Livestock Development RSSDA, Port Harcourt tasked Nigerians particularly those in fish farming to believe in themselves and to take appropriate actions that can reposition the industry for better tomorrow.
