The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has re-inaugurated its Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU) officials into its headquarter and zonal offices, in other to further reiterate its commitment to fight corruption and to maintain a high level of integrity within the council.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at the Shippers Towers in Apapa yesterday, Executive Secretary of the Council, Barrister Hassan Bello said that the establishment of ACTU as a unit under the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) in government parastatals is to address the task of fighting corruption in Nigerian society.
He pointed out that the re-inauguration of the Council's ACTU is a clear indication of its commitment to the aspirations of the Federal Government in combating corruption and in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal Government.
The Council’s boss stated that:"It is our desire to participate in the fight against corruption by creating an organizational environment where all practices which tend to promote corruption are totally eliminated". "An environment where the staff are encouraged to perform their official functions with integrity and full observance of due process"
"To this end, the council will ensure that the ACTU continued to get all the necessary support it may require for the effective performance of its functions" Bello said.
Recounting the achievements of the unit since inception, Bello said that the unit has carried out sensitization seminars for staff of the Council in all its offices. It has also conducted procedural studies of some departments and units of the Council as well as carried out internal investigations of some complaints.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the head of Lagos operations of the ICPC, Mr. Shintema Binga cautioned the ACTU officials against unethical conducts in their process of investigation.
"In the course of your investigation you must not be biased, blackmail or deliberately witch-hunt anyone, you must not go around with an air of pride, superiority or intimidation"
"We have had situations where ACTU officials make themselves gods, ACTU is not a parallel government in the Nigerian Shippers Council, we have only put people of integrity in place so that they won't allow things to degenerate, but they must subject themselves to the laws of the Council"
Binga warned that according to ICPC laws, there is a 10- year imprisonment term for tarnishing the image of an individual without concrete evidence, he warned the members not to fall prey.
Those that were inaugurated include: Mr. S.A Vongtau as Chairman of the Shippers Council ACTU, Mrs. Enoche Ogenyi, Mr. Olusesan Awoniyi, Mr. B.O Ivwighughweta and Mrs. Emeruwa Nkechi.
The zonal representatives include: Mr. N.M Barau for North West Zone, Kano, Mrs. V. Adigun for South West Zone in Ibadan, Mrs Stella Eleyi, South-South zone in Port Hacourt.
Others are: Mrs Ngozi Ndukwe for South Eastern Zone, Aba, and Mr. Lofta Zalwap for North Central Zone in Jos.
