Shocks As Philippines Fails EU Education And Training Audit

The Philippines has failed the first stage of the EU’s European Maritime Safety Administration (EMSA) audit of the country’s maritime training, education and certification system conducted last April.
The unsatisfactory audit result has raised fears that the EU could withdraw recognition of Filipino seafarer certificates.
“The continued employment of Filipino seafarers by EU-flagged merchant vessels may consequently be terminated,” Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario said.

Affected would be 80,000 Filipino crew who comprise 47 per cent of non-EU seafarers on board EU-registered ships.
