SON Displays 2 Container Load Of Suspected Substandard Tyres Seized From Chinese Coy

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in Enugu on Tuesday displayed two 40-foot containers loaded with tyres suspected to be substandard.
The tyres were alleged to be imported by Shandon Shuangwang Coy Ltd of Dawang Industrial Area, Shandong, China.
Briefing newsmen shortly after randomly sampling the tyres, the Head of the organisation’s port operations in Onne Port, Rivers, Mrs Ineba Ojei, said that each of the containers had 700 Double King tyres of various sizes.

Briefing newsmen shortly after randomly sampling the tyres, the Head of the organisation’s port operations in Onne Port, Rivers, Mrs Ineba Ojei, said that each of the containers had 700 Double King tyres of various sizes.
Ojei said that from the physical examination, the importers loaded single tyres in the fore of the containers while the rear was loaded with stuffed tyres.
She said that the seizure was in line with the avowed commitment of the leadership of the organisation to check the alarming rate of the influx of substandard goods into the country and save it from those who were out to convert it into a dumping ground.
Ojei said that the organisation traced the tyres from China through information from its partners, adding that it had spread its tentacles to track and plug avenues for the importation of substandard products.
Also speaking, the Principal Standard Officer of the organisation in Enugu, Mr Ado Ibrahim, said the tyres were “dead on arrival’’ and that the country could not afford to allow its people to purchase such death traps.
Ibrahim said that tyres contained high strength steel mixed with rubber and that the stuffing distorted the steel, forming some pointed edges like needles and that when inflated, they could easily burst on impact with potholes.
“Those tyres are already dead on arrival. SON cannot keep quiet and allow people to finish our economy by importing such killer-tyres,’’ he said.
NAN learnt that the tyres would still be subjected to laboratory tests before their possible destruction.
