Following the new automobile policy put in place to encourage local manufacturing of vehicles in the country; two of India's vehicle manufacturing companies, TATA and TVS Motor Companies, recently said they were interested in establishing automobile plants in Nigeria.
The Principal Executive Officer (Information), National Automotive Council (NAC), Bello Rasheed, said in Abuja that the top management executives of both companies have already made their intentions known in separate visits to the Director General of NAC, Aminu Jalal.
Mr. Rasheed said the TATA delegation comprised P. Gangadharan, N. Menon and Fred Obi, while the TVS team included K. Srinivasan, J. Vignesh and Rajan Menon.
The representatives said both companies were encouraged to come to Nigeria by the new National Automotive Industry Development Plan, NAIDP, recently approved by the Federal Government late last year.
The NAC spokesperson said the visitors were provided with technical details, administrative requirements and NAIDP guidelines for setting up vehicle industrial plants in the country.
Established in 1945, TATA Motors is ranked the world's fifth truck manufacturer and India's largest automobile maker. Its products include cars, buses, utility vehicles, SUVs, trucks, armoured and military vehicles. The company is also the new owners of Land Rover and Jaguar brands.
Similarly, TVS Motors, which is among the world's top ten two-wheeler manufacturers, produces a wide range of motor cycles and three-wheelers.
TATA Africa also has its office along Apapa Oshodi Expressway in Lagos.
