Four Pinoy seafarers aboard a Cyprus-flagged vessel had been apprehended in Australia for importing cocaine, the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported on Monday. In its statement, the DFA highlighted that it is “closely monitoring” the entire situation of the four crew members of the Safe Bulkers vessel dubbed Kypros Bravery.
Reports shared by the Australian media said that federal police had seized nearly 416 kilograms of cocaine from the commercial bulk-carrier vessel off Adelaide. The DFA mentioned that Philippine Consulate General’s representatives in Melbourne had been in conversation with the four seafarers who were charged following the bust.
The DFA added that all four are in good health and are being treated by Australian authorities. The Consulate General is coordinating with Australia’s officials on the case, adding that the seamen have also been provided with individual public lawyers.
On 1 April, they had made an appearance before the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court. The agency gave the Filipinos abroad a reminder to follow the law wherever they may be.
