Rodrigo Duterte, President of the Philippines, has led the inauguration of Cavite Gateway Terminal (CGT), the nation’s first container barge port in Tanza, Cavite.
According to Duterte, who opened the facility at a ceremony on November 22, 2018, the US$26.7 million terminal is the result of a collaborative effort between the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI).
The partners on this project are aiming to address the perennial issue of port and road congestion in the Philippines.
The President said: “By allowing the transport of cargo by sea instead of by land, this project is expected to result in 140,000 fewer truck trips per year.
“This will not only decongest our roads, but also address the long queue of trucks in the Port of Manila.
“The efficient transport of cargo and goods to and from our ports is an important element in the supply chain industry.”
In addition to these comments, Duterte commended ICTSI for helping the government to increase the comfort of citizens living in the Philippines.

The terminal, which is able to accommodate 115,000 TEU each year, was designed to facilitate the seaborne transport of containers from Cavite to major Luzon port facilities, including the ports of Subic and Batangas.
Once fully operational, CGT is expected to reduce Metro Manila traffic by maximizing the role of ro-ro vessels in the transfer of containerized cargo to and from the Port of Manila.
Duterte added: “I assure everyone that in line with our ‘Build, Build, Build’ program, this administration will continue to pursue the timely implementation of crucial projects that will uplift the lives of our countrymen.”
