Chinese sailor electrocuted on board of COSCO bulk carrier

COSCO

25-year old Chinese crew member of COSCO’s bulk carrier COSCO WUYISHAN was electrocuted on Aug 16 at Veracruz, Mexico. COSCO WUYISHAN arrived at Veracruz on Aug 3 from China. Sailor was electrocuted while doing his job, and accidentally touching wires or outlet. His body was taken to hospital for forensic, investigation under way.

Russian freighter struck tanker, Master was intoxicated

Russian general cargo ship EVOLUTION 8 struck berthed chemical tanker GOLDEN CREATION at around 2000 Seoul time Aug 18 at Gamcheon, Busan, Korea, while shifting berths. Both ships were damaged in stern area. Russian Captain of EVOLUTION 8 was tested and found to be intoxicated. As of Aug 19, both ships remained berthed at Gamcheon harbor.

Disabled Russian freighter anchored off Istanbul

General cargo ship SUN UNICORN suffered engine failure shortly after exiting Bosphorus in Black sea at around 1120 UTC Aug 17, while en route from Istanbul to Novorossiysk. Istanbul Traffic Control Center dispatched tug and pilot boat, disabled freighter was towed to Kumkoy Anchorage, Black sea, Istanbul, where she was anchored at around 1500 UTC same day.

Fishing vessel sank after collision with freighter, Korea

Korean 24-ton fishing vessel collided with cargo ship west of Taean County coast, western Korea, Yellow sea, at around 0500 Seoul time Aug 17. Fishing vessel sank, 11 crew were rescued by cargo ship, all are safe. Cargo ship wasn’t identified, but according to positions, track and time, it’s a general cargo ship DK ITONIA, sailing from Pyeongtaek to Mizushima Japan. After collision, the ship moved to Jangansea Anchorage, north of Taean, and anchored, for investigation.

ZIM container ship engulfed in container fire

Report emerged on fire in containers on board of container ship ZIM CHARLESTON, off Colombo. Fire erupted on Aug 7 or 8, when the ship was approaching Colombo or was already anchored, on arrival from Singapore. On Aug 8 ZIM CHARLESTON left Colombo waters and sailed in western direction, turned back and returned during Aug 8-9. was berthed on Aug 11. as of Aug 16, remained berthed. Some 300 containers are probably, damaged.

Egyptian freighter disabled while transiting Dardanelles

General cargo ship MANASSA MOON M suffered engine failure at night Aug 14 in central part of Dardanelles while transiting the Strait in southern direction, en route from Sulina Romania to Tripoli Lebanon. Canakkale Traffic Control tugs responded, freighter was towed to Karanlik anchorage, southern Dardanelles, and anchored. It is highly probably, that she’s loaded with grain originated in Ukraine.

Vessel loaded with fuel engulfed in flames, Vanuatu

Fire erupted on board of landing craft WESTERN STAR and soon engulfed the vessel, on Aug 17 at South West Bay on Malekula island, Vanuatu. Pacific Energy has hired the vessel, Western Star to transport fuel to its clients in the islands. WESTERN STAR was loaded with fuel – understood in barrels. Fire is considered to be major, tug and emergency response teams are deployed. Preliminary reports say there are no signs yet of oil spill, vessel’s hull seems to remain intact. Three people were injured, one of them has been hospitalized.
