There is every indication that Abonema, the headquarters of Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State may soon get a sea port. This much was disclosed by the chairman of the council. Hon. Bar. Paul Awoyesuku in Abonema recently while marking his one year in office.
He also used the celebration to commission several development projects in the area, even a she told indigenes of the coastal town that Abonema has been selected among the six new areas the government plans to develop ports in the country.
He said this will bring economic boom and create jobs for the youths of the area. He therefore urged them to be law abiding and maintain the peace, so that the proposed project may not elude the community. Abonema and other towns in Kalabari kingdom have been the hot bed of serious fighting and militant activities during the heat of the Niger Delta struggle.
Several lives were lost and properties worth millions of naira were lost during the period.
But the proposed sea port is seen as a palliative for the restiveness in the area and a source of meaningful livelihood for the youths
