The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has officially lifted the ban on campaign activities for elective national posts, signaling the commencement of political activities leading to the National Delegates Conference scheduled to hold in Lagos on Friday, March 28, 2025.
This decision was reached during the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held on December 20, 2024.
In a circular issued by the Secretary General of the union, Felix S. Akingboye, on Wednesday, the campaign window will run from January 6, 2025, until 6:00 PM on March 25, 2025. Aspirants vying for elective positions are expected to adhere strictly to the guidelines laid out in the union’s constitution, particularly Rule 7c, sections iii (a, b & c), to avoid disqualification.
The union has emphasized the need for decency and decorum during campaign activities. It stayed that campaigns of calumny or offensive posters will not be tolerated, and violators will face disqualification adding that all candidates are encouraged to maintain integrity and respect for their fellow contestants.
The available posts for the election are as outlined in Rule 7c (ii) of the union’s constitution. Prospective candidates are expected to familiarize themselves with the rules governing the electoral process.
The collection of nomination forms is set to begin on Monday, February 3, 2025. Interested candidates are to obtain the forms from the office of the Deputy Secretary General, Training/Research. Completed forms must be submitted no later than 6:00 PM on Monday, March 3, 2025, in compliance with Rule 7c, section iii (c) of the constitution.
