In a bid to enhance healthcare services and bolster food production amidst challenging economic conditions, the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFFLON) has called on the Federal Government to reduce Customs duties on ambulances, medical, and agricultural equipment, along with fire-fighting vehicles.
The National President of APFFLON, Otunba Frank Ogunojemite, conveyed this appeal in an open letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In the letter, Ogunojemite emphasized the concern shared by freight forwarders, maritime industry stakeholders, medical practitioners, and many Nigerians over the high duties imposed on crucial vehicles and equipment, particularly during a period of economic hardship.
Expressing amazement at the equivalence in duties between essential vehicles and luxury cars, Ogunojemite highlighted the peculiar prioritization of commercial vehicles over ambulances and agricultural equipment. He commended the government’s efforts in various ministries but underscored the necessity of reconsidering Customs duties to alleviate the economic strain.
As a maritime advocacy group, APFFLON proposed that reducing Customs duties could serve as a vital relief for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in different sectors, contributing to the overall economic well-being. The organization urged Presidential advisers and concerned ministries to carefully reassess the matter, emphasizing the potential positive impact on hospitals, agribusinesses, and the administration’s achievements.
APFFLON assured the government of continued collaboration in addressing operational challenges and trade disputes. The organization stressed the importance of fostering ease of doing business, attracting foreign direct investment, and expanding opportunities for the betterment of the country.
