President, Motor Dealers Association of Nigeria; Mr. Ben Ogwumu has disclosed that auto dealership has helped Nigeria youth directly and indirectly to job opportunities that exist in the sub sector of the economy, adding that the figure may double if government can encourage and support the business.
Ogwumu said this at a seminar organised by the National Automotive Council (NAC) in Kaduna.
According to him, policies that can boost the automobile industry will enable entrepreneurs to invest in the sector.
The seminar was meant to discuss guidelines for licensing dealers and importers for sale of vehicles.
He noted that the guidelines drafted by the council were stringent, but that auto dealers will make efforts to comply with them.
The dealer further said the new guidelines should among other things include inputs from the association and the need to ensure that only new motor dealers are made to stock auto spare parts while imported used vehicles should not attract warranty.
"Also, used car dealers must not be made to establish maintenance facilities as condition for licensing and dealers must not be compelled to have agreement with assemblers or distributors.
He also urged the federal government to reduce the levy and duty of imported used vehicles into Nigeria saying that the 70% will create massive job loss for dealers.
"We strongly suggest that 35 per cent on tariff and 35 per cent levy increase on importation of used vehicles should be reduced to 21 per cent and 15 per cent respectively," he said.
He maintained that mechanical Engineers, panel beaters, automobile engineers, washerman and even vulcanisers are some of the artisans that have benefited from vehicle dealership.
