He regretted that the Calabar port has not been performing optimally as expected because importers and clearing agents have refused to patronize it. He stated that the importers can not be held responsible for the non- patronage, because according to him, there is no access road to Calabar town where the port is situated.
‘’ The Calabar – Itu access road is an apology. The bridges crossing the Itu River tributaries are collapsing, and container trucks can hardly use the roads with ease’’, Ahmadu Lawal stated.
He said that the Itu – Calabar Road is very strategic and wonders why the Federal Government will not live up to their bidding, by awarding the contract for dualization of the Calabar road.
The Magajingairi of Calabar said unless access road to Calabar is restored, he does not think that any meaningful development will occur at the ports.
‘’Road infrastructural development is a critical factor for patronage and development of the Calabar Ports, Alhaji Ahmadu Lawal stated.
However, it could be recalled that the issue of reconstruction of Calabar roads has been a major challenge to Cross River State citizens, even as indigenes of the state have also called on the federal government to expedite action to dualise the Calabar road linking Uyo main town.
Only recently, a portion of the culvert connecting Itu bridge collapsed causing water to take over about 60 percent of the road.
