He, therefore, urged all boat drivers and the passengers to always use the life jackets while travelling on the waterways.
The boat accident that occurred last week Tuesday claimed no fewer than 13 lives and left six other people missing.
The senator spoke during the donation of 150 life jackets to the local commercial boat owners operating in the river side communities of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area in Lagos.
He said, “A recent incident that cast a dark shadow on our national landscape comes to mind this minute. It happened on Tuesday when a commercial boat capsized and in the process, lives were lost.
“This sad incident could have been averted (at least to some extent), if proper safety measures were put in place.”
Quoting the section 14 of the 1999 Constitution, Ashafa said, “The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.
“Therefore, safety of our people must be handled with utmost priority because it is only the living that can benefit from the fulfilment of the promises made during electioneering campaigns. In this regard, it is my vision to do all within my power to ensure that my constituents possess the basic equipment for safety when the need arises.”
He urged the boat operators and other passengers to use life jackets while driving, saying that would reduce disasters on waterways.
He said, “We are gathered here today to encourage ourselves to always remain alert and safety conscious, especially for people who use the waterways as their major mode of transportation. I am donating the 150 life jackets to the Local Commercial Boat Owners operating in the river side communities of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA to save the lives of people from preventable disasters.
