The Australian Maritime Safety Agency (AMSA) has imposed a 90-day ban on the Panamanian bulk carrier, “BABUZA WISDOM,” due to numerous detainable deficiencies. Based on the operator’s previous record, the AMSA has also classified the vessel as high-risk.
The operator, “Well Shipmanagement & Maritime Consultant Company,” has experienced multiple detentions for its ships, with a detention rate five times higher than the average for ships visiting Australia.
According to AIS data, the BABUZA WISDOM arrived from Geelong, South Africa, on May 17th and spent eight days in port. The ship is currently docked in Newcastle, Australia. AMSA’s Executive Director of Operations, Michael Drake, expressed concern over Well Shipmanagement’s persistent failure to address safety issues, which jeopardize the lives of seafarers and the environment, despite repeated warnings.
The inspection of the vessel was prompted by the operator’s previous record, revealing a defective rescue boat engine and faulty reserve batteries for the ship’s MF and HF radio frequencies. Additionally, the ship exhibited recurring maintenance and reporting failures in accordance with its implemented safety and management system.
Drake emphasized that the defective engine alone in the rescue boat warranted the ship’s detention, as it compromised the ship’s emergency response capability in situations like a man overboard incident. Furthermore, the defective backup system for the ship’s radio meant it would become inoperable if the ship’s main engine lost power.
