Apparently worried by the rate at which large quantities of products move out of the terminal, all in the name of hundred percent examination and collection of samples, terminal operator; Five Star Logistics Limited, operators of RoRo Terminal 15 at the Tin Can Island Port have said that with effect from the 1st of May, all government agencies involved in cargo examination, including the Nigeria Custom Service, must carry out proper registration of samples collected in other to ensure that they are returned accordingly.
Apparently worried by the rate at which large quantities of products move out of the terminal, all in the name of hundred percent examination and collection of samples, terminal operator; Five Star Logistics Limited, operators of RoRo Terminal 15 at the Tin Can Island Port have said that with effect from the 1st of May, all government agencies involved in cargo examination, including the Nigeria Custom Service, must carry out proper registration of samples collected in other to ensure that they are returned accordingly.
According to the terminal all product samples leaving the terminal will be subjected to proper documentation and signing by any agency before they are allowed to leave the port.
According to a circular that was signed and issued by the management of the company in Lagos and which was sighted by Shipping Position Daily correspondent, henceforth, all sample products must be accompanied with sample forms, which will first be collected from the terminal, filled and signed by agent.
The document also reads in part; “Product sample in large quantities must be taken out in government official vehicle and the officer must be in uniform (in the case of SON, the officer must show his identity card)”
Unlike what is obtainable in the past, Five Star Logistics limited have also warned that any product to be taken out must not be more than one, and that “Only agents with original letter of authority with passport affix is allowed to fill and sign the sample form”
It would be recalled that importers and clearing agents have over the years complained on excess collection of samples by the various government agencies involved in cargo examination at the port.
A freight forwarder within the terminal who spoke with Shipping Position Daily said that the move is a welcomed idea and that it will check the excesses of these government agencies. According to him, “if you take the sample, you look at it and it is okay, you have to return it, some agencies return but some others do not return, so the security agents always want to get it back, if this is not done, we will not know when unauthorized persons will take a products and get away under the pretense that it is sample”
In order to check the rate of accidents happening within the terminal, the Five Star Logistics Limited has also mandated that with effect from 1st of May every persons coming into the port must put on a reflective jacket without which they will not gain access into the port.
The reflective jacket is also expected to carry the name of the company which the bearer is working with.
