Members of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) from Rivers and Bayelsa states are expected to converge at Port Harcourt, Rivers state this week for the institute’s regional conference
The conference which has as its theme: The role of logistics and transport professional in the national development plan is being put together in collaboration with Infinite Intel Consult.
According to a statement issued last week by the institute, Nigeria’s leading logistics supply chain and transport professionals are expected to gather in Port Harcourt to network, share experiences and discuss best practices while finding solutions to the key business challenges.
Also speaking on the forthcoming seminar, president of the institute, Professor Michael Filani expressed sadness over what he described as the terrible transport situation in Port Harcourt metropolis, but added that, CILT as a professional body, CILT can help improve the transport situation in the city.
He expressed joy at the forthcoming seminar as it is one of the ways the institute can be known and make itself relevant and urged all members and professionals in the field to participate fully.
He also disclosed that Lagos and Ogun State governments have recognized the body and given its members employment, while the body is working hard to make the CILT to be recognized worldwide, so that with their professional certificates they can work in any country of the world.
Also speaking, Port Manager, Rivers Port, Mr L. O. Alabi said as a member of the institute he is happy about the growth and progress being made by the body and urged the members to leverage more effectively on the successes achieved so far to make the body well known.
Shippers’ Council Wins 2009 Trade Facilitation Award
Nigerian Shippers’ Council has emerged winner of the 2009 West Africa Maritime Agency award in trade facilitation for being extremely responsive in the course of advancing the fortunes of Shippers in an increasingly competitive international trade.
The Award, which was presented to the Council by the Deputy Executive Secretary, Ghana Shippers’ Council, Mr. Emmanuel Martey on behalf of the organizers; West Africa Business Support Services, was the climax of the one-day 2009 West Africa Business Round Table which held recently in Accra, Ghana.
Mr. Martey, while presenting the award to the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Council, Capt. Adamu Biu, praised the efforts of the Council in promoting and protecting, not only the interest of Nigerian Shippers but also shippers in the sub-region especially in the area of trade facilitation and in the nurturing of sound and positive trade policies that had earned it the coveted award of the best West Africa Maritime Agency of the year.
Receiving the award, Capt. Biu, assured shippers of the firm resolve of his Agency to reduce to its barest minimum, all manner of extraneous factors that are capable of hindering the smooth international trade transactions between Nigeria and her trading partners.
“Our guiding principle in the Council”, he stressed, “is to ensure that we render quality services to shippers by addressing promptly their complaints and enquiries which we believe would always place them at advantaged position in international trade transactions and invariably impact positively on the nation’s economy”, he stressed.
It would be recalled that in a similar event, the Ghana Shippers’ Council was adjudged in 2008 as the best Agency in Trade Facilitation in the Region.
