Less than one month after the Federal Government; through the Presidential Monitoring Committee on Port Reforms in collaboration with the Lagos State Government restored sanity to the notorious Apapa traffic by removing container trucks, tankers and articulated trucks from the road, there are fears that the truck drivers may have discountenanced the order as they have returned to parking on the access road.
Less than one month after the Federal Government; through the Presidential Monitoring Committee on Port Reforms in collaboration with the Lagos State Government restored sanity to the notorious Apapa traffic by removing container trucks, tankers and articulated trucks from the road, there are fears that the truck drivers may have discountenanced the order as they have returned to parking on the access road.
Investigations conducted by Shipping Position Daily at the Creek Road end of Apapa revealed that, right from the Lagos Port Complex, down to popular warehouse roundabout, the road has been occupied by container trucks that are expecting to take delivery of consignments from the port.
Our correspondent who visited Creek Road in Apapa Lagos counted not less than 105 container trucks lining up and blocking the access road last week Thursday.
Already, drivers of the container trucks have started complaining about the long wait they are made to experience daily in the name of picking up consignments.
One of the drivers who spoke with Shipping Position Daily blamed the government for lack of sustainability after a successful move in ensuring free flow of traffic on the port access roads. He advised that concerted effort should be made by the government in ensuring that they control the situation before it returns back fully to the old days.
According to him, business around Apapa has improved since the evacuation of the trucks from the expressway was effected by the government last month.
The driver noted that movement of container trucks in and out of the ports has improved tremendously in the last few weeks, but added that it experienced a lull throughout last week.
‘’The whole thing started on Monday as some trucks were seen on this road which had been free for some weeks now and the flow of traffic in and out of the port has improved because we saw a situation whereby we do not spend up to three hours to drop or to pick up any consignment from the port’’.
‘’I believe it is never too late for the government to put the right personnel on the road to address and arrest what is on ground before the situation gets worse’’ ,the driver lamented.
‘’I must say that I blame the government for the re-emergence of these truck on the road, but I still believe that the officials of the government will swing into action very soon but it is wrong on their part for them not to be on ground to arrest the situation’’.
A bus driver who simply identified himself as Samuel Efosa also complained that, for about a month, commercial drivers have been moving in and out of Creek Road to pick passengers without traffic or presence of laden trucks until now.
Efosa said that long queue of trucks are now visible in other roads in Apapa community.
