As part of efforts to ensure adequate health care for all its officers, the Nigeria Custom Service has commenced the capturing of it’s over 10, 000 newly recruited officers under its National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which is currently being carried out at all its commands in the country.
The NHIS scheme which was introduced into the Nigerian Customs in 2005 is to ensure that all Custom officers are entitled to free health care service at any hospital of their choice along with their family members.

Shipping Position Daily gathered in Lagos last week that since the Nigeria Customs Service has just recruited about 10,000 officers, an exercise which it has not carried out for the past 15 years, the service has decided to extend the health insurance to the new intakes.
Speaking with our correspondent in Lagos on the NHIS scheme, the image maker of the Tin Can port command of Custom, Mr. Chris Osunkwo; explained that the scheme is not only for new intakes but to also capture officers who have been transferred from one duty post to another with their families.
According to Osunkwo, “the scheme recognizes that you as a worker should have one wife and four children in line with the provisions of the Nigerian constitution, so here you register your family in the insurance scheme, we have the health management officers that run the programme, if you are with your family in Lagos here for example, you will have a hospital where you are registered under the programme and your family get free treatment”
“The new officers have not had the opportunity to enjoy this privilege and as a result we want to capture them, some of them are married while some are not, we want to get them, give them their numbers and their identity cards” he said.
He explained further that officers who have lost their identity cards would have to pay to receive a new one, and that those that have been married to more than one wife will pay N9,000 for each additional wife and each additional child because the scheme only recognizes one wife and four children.
