Customs Collects N893.3Million In February

The Lagos Industrial Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) yesterday said it collected N893.3 million as revenue in February.
The Comptroller of the command, Mrs Nkem Nzeribe, made this known in a statement issued in Lagos.
She said that N839.0 million was generated as revenue in the same period in 2012.
Nzeribe said that the command generated its revenue from the excise duty imposed on factories.

Nzeribe said that the command generated its revenue from the excise duty imposed on factories.
“We used to collect revenue from various commodities like milk, soap and beverages, but these items were de-excised. So, we stopped collecting duty from them.
“The only items on which we collect duty now are tobacco and alcoholic drinks.
“The de-excising of other goods was to protect the infant industries and allow their growth and development,” she said.
Nzeribe said that the revenue generated in January 2013 was N1.08 billion against N1.19 billion realised in January, 2012.
The comptroller said that the total revenue collected by the command in 2012 was N10.6 billion.
