Unhappy with the high rate of Chinese nationals involved in the importation of contraband into the Nigeria, the Controller in charge of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Muhammad Uba, has said that the unit would soon embark of sensitisation of the foreign nationals.
He disclosed recently at an engagement with the media, where he displayed some Elephant Tusks and Pangolin Shell that the unit seized from some Chinese, he added that the unit would engage Chinese nationals through their association on the import and export laws of Nigeria.
He wondered why the Chinese will be involved in trading in illegal items in Nigeria, when such items are also prohibited in their own country, adding that he will keep arresting them as far as they keep infringing on Nigerian trade laws.
“The arrest of the Chinese national is taking new dimension, this is about to two or three times that Chinese nationals are arrested. In our own case we can make an arrangement with their association if any and I believe they have, so that we can enlighten them on what to bring in and what not to bring into the country. When that one is done and even if not done, if they continue to infringe on our law, we will continue to arrest them. In their country, elephant tusks are prohibited. It is illegal in China”, he stated.
He also said that the legal department of the unit is looking into the matter but the seized Elephant tusk and Pangolin shell will be forfeited to the federal government.
