The Seme border command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has disclosed that it intercepted 286 cartons of poultry products valued at N2.1 million.
Public Relations Officer of the command, Ernest Olottah, told newsmen that the seized products were intercepted on Wednesday.
He said that between January and February, the command made 88 seizures of contraband goods with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N31.7 million.
According to him, “the vehicle carrying the offensive goods was stopped for a routine check and in the course of searching through the vehicle, it was discovered that poultry products where hidden at various corners of the vehicles as you saw earlier on.
“From there, the interrogation and while the interrogation was on, the man took to his heels and because there were crowd there, the officers pursued for a little distance and then stopped because we cannot use our weapon at that material time to avoid casualty.
“There was no loss of life, no injury sustained except we feel pained that we could not arrest the suspect.
“However, the vehicle carrying the offensive goods is in our custody with the offensive goods in question. “
Olotta  added that the seized items would be destroyed on March 22 in the presence of other government agencies, including the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
He said that the Mazda 626 containing the poultry products would be taken to court to seek court condemnation.
Olotta advised smugglers to desist from their unpatriotic acts which affected the nation’s economy.
He said that smuggling had also made it difficult for young graduates to get jobs as local industries would not be able to produce at installed capacity.
He urged Nigerians to be careful in patronising sellers of smuggled frozen foods, which could be dangerous to health. .
