The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) said on Wednesday that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) required sophisticated equipment to combat smuggling on the nation’s porous borders.

In a paper entitled “Stakeholders Obligations and Expectation in a Modern Customs Environment,’’ Dawodu called for a collaborative arrangement between MAN and NCS on “covert surveillance on smuggled goods’’
He expressed concern that items on the prohibition list of import still find their way into the Nigeria market and no customs duties were paid.
“The nation’s seaports, airports and borders, where the Customs Service is officially assigned, are very porous and these needs to be addressed to offer improved resistance to smuggling activities. ’’
He added that thousands of illegal entry points along Nigeria’s massive land and sea borders posed a real challenge to the effective control of smuggling at the border posts..
He, therefore, called for more scanning machines, patrol vans, installed radar, helicopters, patrol marine boats and fire to enable the Service effectively police the nation’s borders.
The MAN president said that with 10 sectoral and 75 sub-sectoral groups of the association, covering all facets of the industry in Nigeria; members were well disposed to offer information on prohibited goods.
