Truck owners under the auspices ,Nigeria Association of Transport Road Owners (NARTO), last week undertook medical check up to know their current status even as they were educated on the symptoms and prevention of the Ebola virus.
NARTO said that drivers of vehicles, lifting consignment from the seaports to other parts of the country are vulnerable to any form of diseases; hence there is the need for members to know their health status and to be educated on the deadly Ebola virus.
The association said, “the health status of the members operating in Apapa is aimed at drawing the consciousness of directors of each organization under the association to the need for them to know their health status, and also for them to educate their drivers and conductors on health tips.”
NARTO also reiterated its commitment to members about their health status thus bringing experts to sensitize its members on the need to have a feel about their health status.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily in his office in Lagos, Executive Secretary of NARTO, Barrister Emmanuel Gowon explained that the present health challenges in the country, gave rise for the need to have a programme that centered round health for members.
‘’We are doing for our members who are directors of various companies within Apapa area for now and we are looking at how the doctors could check their health status considering the Ebola outbreak and other health related issue they might have, which can be treated by our experts’’
‘’But most especially the sensitization of the directors is to look at the Ebola virus, how not to contact it and how to avoid it, and how to seek for medical attention where they find themselves in the line of duty.’’
According to him, drivers of trucks with all forms of consignment from the Lagos ports to other parts of the country are vulnerable and are exposed to all forms of diseases, hence the need to check their health status.
He noted that the health check is for directors of various companies under the association, but added that after the enlightenment, the directors are expected to encourage the drivers and conductors to do same.
