Security guards at Five Star Logistics terminal of the Tin Can Island Port Lagos have extended their services from securing the terminal to also board vessels laden with imported vehicles. This follows the rising complaints by importers about the bad state of their vehicles.
A source at the security outfit, operating at the Five Star terminal; Sovereign Guard Limited has alleged that dockworkers are responsible for the vandalism of imported used vehicles onboard vessels, even as he told Shipping Position Daily last week that dozens of the dockworkers have recently been apprehended by security men and that they are presently at the Kirikiri prison over various degrees of damages and vandalism on imported vehicles.
The source hinted that on many occasions, dockworkers have been caught by security guards at the exit gate of the terminal with stolen car accessories, a development which necessitated the need to extend their checks to vessels laden with vehicles.
According to him, “the development started last year when importers laid several complaints about the state of their vehicles to the management of the Five Star Logistics and we the security  men suspected that since it is not from the terminal;  that is the car parks,  then it should be from the vessels carrying the vehicles".
Our source also added that, "it took a while for us to catch some of the dockworkers who are involved in the act of vandalism on cars onboard vessels".
"So far I have been involved in the arrest of four of the dockworkers and about twelve of them are in Kirikiri".
However the two stevedoring companies, namely Litex and Good intention Limited are in top discussions with the management of Five Star Logistics on ways to address the issue.
He also disclosed that brand new vehicles aboard vessels berthing at the terminal are not tampered with by the vandals.
He added that accessories like car stereo, gear boxes, juncture boxes brain boxes and side mirror are the target of the thieves.
