The Zone ’C’, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service has impounded 11 vehicles loaded with contraband even as it rakes in N1.2 billion into the federation account in the first eight months of the year, its Controller, Dr Hussein Kangiwa has said.
Kangiwa told journalists that apart from the 11 vehicles impounded with contraband last month, the command according also seized three vehicles with contraband along Benin-Ore highway.
He disclosed that eight containers of assorted goods were seized in Owerri.
Giving an insight into the seizures, the Customs boss disclosed that some of the items were used tires, clothing, detergents, ladies and men wears and assorted textile materials.

According to him, four persons had been convicted while cash offered as bribes to customs officials was retained as exhibit in the court. He said that the command had intensified efforts to reduce the activities of smugglers in its areas of operations which are the 11 states of the South-East and South-South.
“We will not compromise in this illegal business; but, those with genuine business deals we will assist and encourage,’’ Kangiwa said. He, however, said that its operation was being hampered by lack of operational vehicles for patrol duty, but commended the efforts of the Customs Comptroller- General, Alhaji Hamman Bello Ahmed, towards re-positioning the service.
