Following the recent accident that claimed the lives of seven officials of the Nigerian Customs Service on their way to the Customs headquarters in Abuja, a maritime pressure group has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to probe the Comptroller General of Customs Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko Inde over the tragedy.
The pressure group; the Save Nigerian Freight Forwarders Importers Exporters Coalition [SNFFIEC] made the call in Lagos last week even as its national coordinator; Chief Patrick Osita Chukwu affirmed that the essence of the officials going to Abuja could have been addressed at the zonal headquarters at Harvey Road in Yaba, Lagos.
The deceased officers had reportedly left Lagos in response to a summon by the headquarters of the Nigeria Customs Service in Abuja, but the vehicle they were all travelling in had an accident around Sagamu in Ogun state, leading to their death.
Since the tragedy, there has been anger in the industry, but the Save Nigerian Freight Forwarders Importers Exporters Coalition told our correspondent that, ‘’we are calling on Mr. President to probe the CG and his subordinates because we what to know why these gentlemen died. Let them tell us because ‘Save Nigeria’ is calling for probe of the accident that took the lives of those seven officers of the Nigeria Customs Service”, he added.
“The reason for the Customs officers travelling to Abuja can be solved in Lagos and we have Assistant Comptroller General [ACG] at Harvey Road who is there to represent the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service on such affairs’’, the group lamented.
‘’The ACG should be given some responsibility because he is representing the CG of Customs in Lagos, I don’t see what they cannot solve in Lagos that the CG can solve it in Abuja. Why must he summon those officers when we all know what our roads and air transportation systems are”.
The national coordinator of the group said that the practice of frequent summoning of Customs officers to Abuja for little reasons led to their death of the seven.
