ISPS Code: Frontline Master Mariner Says Nigeria Will Meet The Deadline

A  first generation master mariner; Captain Abiodun Omoteso has assured Nigerians that the 90 days deadline given by the United States of America Coast Guard to Nigeria on implementation of the International Ship a d Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code will be met.
Speaking at a Round Table organized by the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) in Apapa yesterday, Omoteso said the nation’s maritime sector had already being implementing the ISPS code immediately after the concessioning of the ports.

Speaking at a Round Table organized by the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) in Apapa yesterday, Omoteso said the nation’s maritime sector had already being implementing the ISPS code immediately after the concessioning of the ports.
He said before the ports were concessioned, a lot of miscreants popularly called ‘wharf rats’ had turned the ports virtually to residential place.
According to Omoteso, with the taking over of the ports by the private investors, the ports environments are virtually becoming more secured as the concessionaires have put in place measures to restrict people from entering the ports indiscriminately.
 He noted that the ISPS code was introduced immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attack on World Trade Centre adding that the destruction would have been more devastating if it had been through the sea.
The master mariner also used the opportunity to inform the public about the World Hydrography Day which is slated for June 21, 2013. The occasion will afford the public to get awareness about the vital role that hydrography plays in every one’s life.
Omotesho said the theme for this year’s World Hydrography Day, which is also the 92nd anniversary of the establishment of the IHO is “ Hydrography – Underpinning the Blue Economy”.
