In light of menace of water hyacinth affecting waterway navigation in many parts of the state, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has opened the Ibeshe Jetty and Majidun Landing as alternative ferry routes.

According to an official statement made available to our correspondent, the General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel revealed the agency’s move to open the Ibeshe Jetty and Majidun facilities as part of a comprehensive plan to inspect alternatives and enhance existing conditions.

Oluwadamilola noted that this initiative aims to mitigate the impact of the natural hindrance, ensuring uninterrupted water transport services for commuters. He explained that the Ibeshe and Majidun jetties offer viable alternatives to bypass areas heavily affected by water hyacinth infestation, adding that the Ibeshe Jetty’s proximity to Ikorodu Terminal by road enables commuters to reach their destination in under 15 minutes, providing a swift and efficient alternative.

The LASWA MD highlighted the authority’s dedication to ensuring safe and efficient water transportation within the state.

Oluwadamilola also informed that LASWA has already commenced efforts to clear affected routes of water hyacinth and is collaborating with relevant environmental agencies to implement long-term solutions. The agency is exploring technological advancements and strategies to prevent future water hyacinth influx.

The statement added that: “The presence of mobile police and local security contributes to the overall safety of the area, fostering a secure environment for commuters and their belongings. Adding to the appeal, the Ibeshe Jetty is equipped with a car wash, providing an added convenience for those who wish to maintain the cleanliness of their vehicles while utilizing water transport. Integrating efficient water transportation, reliable road connectivity, and convenient amenities positions the Ibeshe Jetty as a comprehensive and attractive option for commuters”.

“LASWA has already initiated efforts to clear the affected routes of water hyacinth and is working in collaboration with relevant environmental agencies to implement long-term solutions. The agency is also exploring technologies and strategies to prevent future occurrences of water hyacinth influx and ensure the sustainability of water transportation in the state”, Oluwadamilola noted.
