Liberian President Waives Customs Duties On Water, Electricity, Broadcast Equipment Imports

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has issued an Executive Order No. 49, exempting the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), the National Transit Authorities, Liberia Electricity Corporation, the Liberia Broadcasting System from customs duties on certain products.

According to an Executive Mansion release, President Sirleaf, issuing Executive Order No. 49, stated that in the interest of national reconstruction and development, the Government has granted the LWSC exemption from the payment of customs duties on diesel fuel, and consumable spares, and low-lift and high-lift pumps, all to be used at the Water Treatment Plant (s), imported or purchased by the LWSC for the exclusive use of the Corporation to facilitate the provision of water and sewer services.
In extending Executive Order No. 36, President Sirleaf emphasized that the Government recognizes that safe drinking water and basic sanitation are crucial to the preservation of human health and basic hygiene, and that it must seek to ensure that policies and institutions for water supply and sanitation service delivery, as well as for water resources development and management, respond effectively to the needs and priorities of the population.
Regarding Executive Order No. 51, the President, in the interest of national reconstruction and development, has exempted from customs duty or grants 100% customs duty waiver on all fuel and lubricants for the use of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), the National Transit Authority (NTA), and schools, clinics and hospitals that are deemed by the Minister of Finance to be inadequately covered by Government's budgetary appropriations and subsidies.
In extending Executive Order No. 41, the President indicated that the Government recognizes that the need for customs duty exemption on fuel to generate electricity, provide public transportation and information, minimize the operating costs of schools, clinics and hospitals that are not adequately covered by Government's budgetary appropriations or subsidies, is imperative at this time of rising costs and rapid development.
