There are strong indications that some manpower training institutions from the government and private sectors in the maritime industry may form an alliance in order to achieve common goals and objectives.
According to its promoters, the purpose of the body is to create awareness in the industry on activities relating to manpower and human capacity building, create a strong synergy between public and private participation in the area of training stakeholders, among others.
A source close to the organisers disclosed to Shipping Position Daily, in Lagos last week, that there is the need for maritime training institutions to come up with an association which in turn will draw government closer to the sector in the area of manpower development.
According to him, ‘’much is not heard about capacity building in the maritime industry and we believe that with the coming together of people with like minds, it is achievable’’.
‘’We have so many things in common, therefore we need to come together with the aim of projecting what we doing in the area of building capacity for the youths of this nation and also professionals who already  have a career in the industry ,our source disclosed.
He revealed that government’s institute like the Maritime Academy of Nigeria [MAN] Oron and will be consulted on the issue in order to know their positions before it will be made public.
‘’It is still in the pipeline, so we cannot speak on it until what is in the pipeline turns into the physical, but it is not really about association but in Nigeria it has become obvious that nobody can defend himself expect  through an association’’, another source form a maritime training institute disclosed.
The source went further to say that, “no matter who you are, no matter your powers, you cannot defend yourself but when you come through an association, it is the only time you will get audience’’.
‘’And that is the way every sector in the economy and even the lay man form an association because that becomes the only way through which you can be heard’’, he added.
Sources however revealed that there will be an exploratory meeting to be attended by some top management of some institute in September to kick –start the process that will lead to the birth of the association.
