Merchant Navy Appoints New Team To Replace ‘Expelled’ Shipping Zone Executives

The Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transporters Senior Staff Association said last week that it has appointed a new management team headed by Engr. Reginald Onyenobi to oversee affairs of its Shipping Zonal Council.

In a series of documents sent to Shipping Position Daily by President of the association, Engr. Mathew Alalade, the association insisted that members of the dissolved executives headed by Comrade Ajao Lateef and his Vice Chairman, Capt Segun Oniye can not speak for the association again following their expulsion since July 4, 2017.

The association said that the decision to expel executive members of the Shipping Zonal Council was jointly reached at the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held at Onne, Rivers State.

Top on the list of  allegations that were leveled  against the dissolved executives include, promotion of a Maritime Security Agency (MASECA) Bill at the National Assembly, an action deemed as 'anti-association' activities by the CWC.

In the letter dated 12th July 2017, Reginald Onyenobi and the new team were authorised to organize and oversee the day-to-day running of the shipping zonal council until further notice.

The letter, a copy of which was sent to Shipping Position Daily stated that: "You and other national officers of the zone, Comrade Eng. Wale George and Comrade Eng. Sadiq Adeola and other executives of the shipping zone are expected to reorganize it"

"Whilst the Central Working Committee and the national secretariat assure you of our Maximum Corporation and solidarity" the letter added.

Making a reference to a publication in Shipping Position Daily recently where the Vice Chairman of the expelled executives, Capt Segun Oniye told one of our correspondent that 39 seafarers have been kidnapped in 2017 alone,  President of the union, Enge. Alalade distanced the union from such statements.

He said that Oniye has seized to represent the union since 4th of July 2017.
