A source at Germany-headquartered NSB Niederelbe said that although damage to the ship and its cargo cannot be assessed until the salvage Captain from the already-arrived Smit tug has reported, based on the pictures it received back from the fleet sister ship, it appeared that "neither the superstructure, engine room, the stern section nor the forecastle are directly affected by the fire or the explosion".
NSB also advised that the second engineer from the 5,618 teu Hanjin Ottawa – which has now continued on its routing via the Suez Canal – was transferred to the tugboat to assist with the fire-fighting operation in view of his technical expertise.
MSC’s UK website is still showing the 6,750 teu MSC Flaminia as arriving at Felixstowe on Thursday.
