The Nasarawa State Government has shown a keen interest in partnering with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) to facilitate the establishment of an Inland Dry Port (IDP) within the state. This collaboration aims to streamline shipping activities and bolster trade opportunities.
A press release signed by the NSC Assistant Director, Public Relations, Mrs Rebecca Adamu revealed that this development came after a closed-door meeting with the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Barr. Pius Akutah and the Executive Governor of Nassarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule recently.
Akutah emphasized that the Governor has already issued directives to expedite the realization of the project for the benefit of shippers in the state.
Highlighting the state’s significant production of sesame seeds, Akutah stressed the necessity of an Inland Dry Port in Nassarawa State. To actualize this initiative, the State Governor has directed the Attorney General of the State to engage with the management of the Nassarawa Investment Agency.
In a bid to fast-track the development of the Inland Dry Port, the NSC Chief Executive Officer mentioned the State Government’s planned visit to the Nigerian Shippers’ Council. Additionally, he emphasized Nassarawa State’s commitment to advocating for the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) and ensuring awareness creation about its benefits, especially for exporters in the state.
Recall that the NSC as the ports’ economic regulator, actively facilitates the development of Inland Dry Port projects across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. The overarching goal is to decentralize shipping facilities, ease congestion at seaports, and bolster economic activities in hinterlands.
Akutah believes that establishing dry ports nationwide will not only create employment opportunities for Nigerians but also significantly enhance revenue generation for the government.
