Nigeria Stock Market Closes Week 28 Gainers 28 Losers

At the end of the last weekday of trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 363,147,258 shares in 6,644 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 6,073,464,261.11, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, August 3), Friday’s data showed 18% decline in volume, 19% improvement in turnover, but 6% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 35.5 trillion.

 

In the aggregate, 116 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 28 gainers and 28 losers. Glaxo Smithkline Consumer led the gainers with 9.88% share price appreciation closing at NGN 8.90 per share, followed by Cadbury Nigeria (+9.84%), Abbey Mortgage Bank (+9.77%) and Chellarams (+9.71%). On the losing side, Eterna came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.83% at NGN 21.10 per share, followed by Meyer (-9.83%), Ikeja Hotel (-9.7%) and University Press (-9.24%). Transcorp Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 29.3 million traded shares, followed by FBN Holdings (28.4m), FCMB Group (26.8m) and Zenith Bank (23.9m).

 

Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 64.98 (-0.1%) points to close at 65,198.08, representing a 1-week gain of 0.22%, a 4-week gain of 3.42%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 27.21%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (+0.29%; +0.38% 1WK; +42.98% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-0.13%; +0.15% 1WK; +28.82% YTD), NGX Consumer Goods Index (+0.77%; +2.27% 1WK; +50.4% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+0.71%; +5.88% 1WK; +55.86% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (+0.11%; -0.07% 1WK; +19.87% YTD), and NGX Pension Index (+0.06%; +0.43% 1WK; +54.26% YTD).
