Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Mallam Habib Abdullahi has said that there has been an increase in the number of petroleum tanker vessels that are calling at the nation’s seaports, even as he revealed that there has been an increase in the level of crude tankers coming into the country.
Abdullahi made this remark when he addressed members of the Senate committee on marine transport who visited the NPA on an oversight function in Lagos last week.

According to the NPA boss, the number of petroleum tanker vessels operating in Nigeria as at the year 1999 was 566 and that it has increased tremendously to 902 in 2012.
He explained that Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers have also received a boost from the former 46 in the year 1999 to 426 in the year 2012.
Abdullahi said that “if you look at the Liquefied Natural Gas, it is the same thing, it has increased from 46 to 426 as of today, and this is a tremendous achievement. Gas importation also increased from 110 million Celsius to the present figure of 426 Celsius, this is about 100% increase.”
He noted that the recorded increases can be attributed to the concessioning exercise, saying that this has afforded the terminal operators to be on their own in privatised port system.
